      BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Many crimes that officers are faced with are, in some way, related to the drug trade. Robberies, burglaries, thefts and prostitution are just a few. Officers are not only finding that more, but different illegal drugs are making their way into our city. Officers are not always allowed, by law, to search areas that may contain the hidden narcotics.

The K-9 unit will do drug sweeps in our schools, and this alone has proven to reduce the amount of illegal drugs that are taken into our schools on a daily basis. By adding a K-9 unit to Springfield Police Department, we feel that it will not only level the playing field, but it will absolutely make it safer for our officers.

Many citizens of Springfield believe this program is a much-needed assest, and would greatly assist our officers in cleaning up our streets. For instance, in 2000, Columbus P.D. K-9 units took $654,125.00 worth of illegal marcotics off their sreets.
